Hunter Quiz Bowl places 2nd at PACE NSC

{summary}

Hunter finished in second place at the PACE National Scholastic Championship, with our A team losing in the final match to State College High School. The fact that this team consists of three juniors and a sophomore makes this achievement even more remarkable. On Sunday morning they had a string of wins against several heavily favored opponents. In addition, although our B team did not qualify for the top playoff bracket, they also had several major wins. Students practice four days a week, and all the hard work this year paid off in a big way.

HUNTER WEARS 2 CROWNS - BOYS AND GIRLS VARSITY LACROSSE CAPTURE TWO PSAL CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sophomore attack Nick Mietkowski scored three goals and Max Baren set up two, lifting the Hawks over defending champion and top-seeded Long Island City, 6-4, to win the boys “B” championship.  Hunter also defeated Madison, 9-8, in the girls “B” final, avenging its lone loss of the regular season.  Sam Williams, Oliver Yu and Eric Lippin also connected for the Hawks (11-5), who held a 3-2 advantage at halftime.  Coach Johnson Wong’s squad, which finished third in the league, split its games with LIC but finished the season with victories in six of its last seven overall.  Sophomore Jonathan Ortiz made 14 saves for the Hawks.  The Lady Hawks (13-1) led by coach Bowler , who rolled over A. Philip Randolph, 12-2, in the semifinals, showcased more of their offensive prowess Sunday, connecting on nine of 20 shots (45%).  Junior attack Jean Kim scored four goals while Lily Kong and Tiffany Wong had two a piece, and Alison Sikowitz had one. Kim tallied seven goals in the playoffs, finishing with 26 for the season.  Sophomore goalie Phoebe Tran stopped 14 shots.
