[20 May 2013] - International Science and Engineering Fair Finalists
Science teacher and Research Coordinator Gilana Reiss reports from Phoenix, Arizona with Hunter’s 5 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair Finalists: Axel Feldman & Stefan Colton; Kalia Firester; Alexander Epstein & Anna Blech. All of our students did extremely well and had a lot of fun presenting their projects. Each of our projects drew a lot of attention.
In addition, Alex & Anna won 3rd place in the Microbiology Category for the entire fair and Kalia Firester won 2nd place in the Plant Sciences Category for the entire fair. Kalia is also getting a meteor named after her. Axel and Stefan entertained everyone and everyone was very impressed with their project that they did on their own without a mentor. Congratulations to all of them!

We are excited to announce an evolution of our after-school Mandarin program. Working with the Chinese Flagship Center of Hunter College, starting in Fall of 2013, after-school Mandarin at the Campus Schools will be a more substantial program which can lead courses that earn Hunter College credit. In 2013-14, we will be offering Non-credit Introduction to Chinese, Part I and Part II (Fall Semester and Spring Semester, respectively) for all grades and Hunter College Elementary Chinese I (full year) for Grades 8 and up.
Hunter College Middle School debate teams won the top awards at the Middle School Public Debate Program National Championship Tournament hosted byClaremont McKenna College in Claremont, CA on April 20th. Hunter’s first place team won the Grand Final round, arguing against the proposition that “The U.S. President should have the authority to execute American citizens without judicial oversight.” “Hunter’s accomplishment is extraordinary. Out of thousands of students participating in the program this year across the country, their outstanding young debaters accomplished something no other school has ever done,” said Kate Shuster, Ph.D., founder and co-director of the MSPDP. Please click here for more details and to see the names of all the HCCS Winners

[19 March 2013] - Hunter MATHCOUNTS

The Hunter MATHCOUNTS team finished in 2nd place out of the 48 schools competing at the MATHCOUNTS State Competition held at RPI on Saturday, March 16. The #1 team from the Rochester area has dominated for the last three years. The Hunter team (eighth graders Serina Hu (captain), Karen Chen, Max Everett, Tanya Hao, and David Liu (alternate)) worked together beautifully and their hard work won them all 2nd place trophies. Serina was one of 14 students to qualify for the fast-paced Countdown Round and won the final round against a very strong upstate competitor. She came home with the #1 in Countdown trophy, but, since the NYS Countdown Round is unofficial, she just missed qualifying for Nationals.
{extended}
